The Tisza party has made history by winning a landslide victory in Hungary’s parliamentary election, securing 52.49% of the vote against the ruling Fidesz party, which garnered 38.83%. This significant shift in power comes after 16 years of Viktor Orban’s leadership, who conceded defeat as Tisza is projected to capture more than 130 mandates in the 199-seat parliament.
In a remarkable turnout of over 77%, the election saw Tisza capturing 138 seats, granting them a two-thirds majority. This victory not only reflects the public’s desire for change but also indicates a potential shift in Hungary’s approach to governance and its relationship with the European Union.
Peter Magyar, the leader of Tisza, expressed gratitude to the voters, stating, “Thank you, Hungary!” His campaign focused on grassroots support and addressing public discontent, contrasting sharply with Fidesz’s strategy, which relied on fear of war and welfare measures.
Viktor Orban, who has been a dominant figure in Hungarian politics, acknowledged the outcome with a congratulatory phone call to Magyar, marking a significant moment in Hungary’s political landscape. Orban stated, “From the opposition we will also serve our homeland and the Hungarian nation,” indicating a commitment to continue contributing to the country despite his defeat.
Tisza’s victory is expected to lead to reforms aimed at combating corruption and restoring judicial independence, addressing long-standing concerns about the erosion of democratic standards under Orban’s government. This change could also pave the way for the release of EU funds that had been suspended due to Hungary’s previous adversarial stance within the union.
Polling had indicated a stable lead for Tisza leading up to the election, and the results confirm a significant shift in voter sentiment. The election marks a pivotal moment for Hungary, as it may end the country’s adversarial role within the EU and foster a more collaborative relationship moving forward.
As the nation celebrates this democratic milestone, the future remains uncertain. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the immediate changes that will follow this election, but the community is hopeful for a new direction under Tisza’s leadership.
