What Happened
Montenegro is actively positioning itself as a potential new member of the European Union (EU), with senior EU officials aiming to complete accession talks by the end of this year. Prime Minister Milojko Spajic has expressed a vision of Montenegro as a nation that enhances the EU’s diversity and economic richness. The country, with a population of approximately 630,000, is noted for its ethnic diversity and harmonious internal relations, which may work in its favor during the accession process.
Why It Matters
Montenegro’s bid for EU membership is significant as it could mark the first expansion of the EU since 2013. The European commissioner for enlargement, Marta Kos, indicated that if technical negotiations conclude by 2026, Montenegro could become the EU’s 28th member by 2028. This potential membership is viewed positively by EU officials, who see Montenegro’s unique cultural and ethnic composition as an asset.
What’s Next
In addition to its EU aspirations, Montenegro is gaining international recognition through its cultural contributions, such as the film The Tower of Strength, which has garnered over 10,000 admissions in its first ten days in cinemas. The film is set to participate in various international film festivals, further showcasing Montenegro’s artistic talents. Meanwhile, the presidents of Montenegro and North Macedonia are scheduled to attend the 13th Global Baku Forum in Azerbaijan in March, indicating ongoing diplomatic engagement.
