Alysha Newman, a celebrated Canadian pole vaulter, has received a 20-month ban for failing to comply with doping control regulations. This comes despite her announcement that she has ended her career in the sport.
Before this decision, Newman was on the brink of a promising future after winning bronze for Canada at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She had previously achieved remarkable success, including medals at the Commonwealth Games and the Pan American Games.
The ban stems from three instances where she was unavailable for unannounced doping controls: once in February and twice in August of last year. The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) determined that these failures constituted an anti-doping rules violation.
Newman, now 31 years old, expressed disappointment over the situation. “I had to leave immediately to participate in the filming of a television game show,” she explained. This unforeseen commitment contributed to her inability to comply with the doping regulations.
As per the rules set by the AIU, three whereabouts failures within a 12-month period can lead to sanctions. Newman’s suspension will last until August 2027, closing off any potential return to competition.
During her career, Newman competed in two world championships finals and earned accolades that made her one of Canada’s standout athletes. Her achievements included gold and bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games and a bronze medal at the Pan American Games.
