What Happened
Bangladesh has formally requested a three-year deferral of its graduation from the Least Developed Country (LDC) category, citing significant global and domestic economic challenges. The request was communicated in a letter signed by Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky, Secretary of the Economic Relations Division, to José Antonio Ocampo, chair of the United Nations Committee for Development Policy. This committee is set to review the request from February 24 to 28.
Why It Matters
Despite meeting the graduation criteria for income, human assets, and economic vulnerability, Bangladesh’s five-year preparatory period has been disrupted by overlapping crises, including the lingering effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, and domestic financial sector weaknesses. Officials warn that graduating under the current timeline could adversely affect key sectors, particularly the readymade garment industry, due to uncertainties surrounding future trade preferences.
What’s Next
The Enhanced Monitoring Mechanism (EMM) of the UN Committee for Development Policy will evaluate Bangladesh’s request in light of recent socio-economic data and the implementation of the Smooth Transition Strategy. The outcome of this assessment will be crucial for determining whether Bangladesh will receive the requested deferral until 2029, as it navigates the complexities of transitioning from LDC status.
