What Happened
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of 55,689 pounds of frozen blueberries produced by Oregon Potato Company LLC, due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This recall was initially flagged on February 12 and was upgraded to a Class 1 recall on February 24, indicating a serious health risk.
Why It Matters
Listeria monocytogenes can cause severe health issues, including serious adverse health consequences or even death, particularly in vulnerable populations such as the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. The affected blueberries were distributed across several U.S. states—Michigan, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin—as well as Canada, although they were not sold directly to consumers in retail stores.
What’s Next
The recall remains ongoing, and consumers are advised to check their freezers for the affected products, which include 30-pound cases with expiration dates from July 23, 2027, to July 24, 2027, and 1,400-pound totes expiring on November 25, 2027. The lot codes for the recalled blueberries are 2055 B2, 2065 B1, 2065 B3 for the 30-pound cases, and 3305 A1, 3305 B1 for the totes. Consumers who find these products should not consume them and should dispose of them immediately.
