The transition to electric and hybrid vehicles in Abbotsford has been increasing over the past three years. As of 2025, electric and hybrid vehicles made up 12.8% of the total vehicles in the city, which translates to 4,928 electric vehicles and an additional 6,722 hybrid vehicles on the roads. This remarkable growth reflects a community-wide commitment to sustainability and cleaner transportation options.
In the previous year, Abbotsford saw a 2.3% increase in the share of electric and hybrid vehicles, contributing to a staggering 100% growth in the ratio of these vehicles since 2022. This surge aligns with broader trends across British Columbia, where the share of electric and hybrid vehicles rose from 12.1% to 14.4% from 2024 to 2025.
Local dealerships are also playing a crucial role in this transition. Castlegar Hyundai, for instance, sold 24 battery electric vehicles in 2025 and was honored with the Green Star Awards Top Battery Electric Vehicle Sales category for the Interior Region. Keith Kalawsky, a representative from the dealership, expressed his excitement, stating, “We are surprised and thrilled to be recognized by Clean BC.” He added, “Our dealership has offered EVs since 2019, so our product advisors are very knowledgeable and love helping others learn more about these impressive vehicles.”
The provincial government is actively supporting this shift towards electric vehicles, with more than 7,000 public charging stations currently available throughout British Columbia. Adrian Dix, a government official, stated, “We have more than 7,000 public charging stations throughout the province and are on track to meet our target of 10,000 by 2030.” This infrastructure is vital for encouraging more residents to consider electric vehicles.
As the community embraces these changes, local leaders are also acknowledging the challenges that come with this transition. Blair Qualey, a spokesperson for the automotive industry, remarked, “We appreciate the provincial government’s recognition of these pressures and its commitment to a comprehensive review of ZEV mandates next spring.” This indicates a proactive approach to ensure that the growth in electric vehicle adoption is sustainable and supported by necessary policies.
Looking ahead, the future of electric vehicles in Abbotsford appears bright. With continued efforts from both the government and local businesses, the community is poised to further increase its share of electric and hybrid vehicles. The commitment to sustainability and cleaner transportation options is not just a trend; it is becoming a way of life for many residents in Abbotsford.
