The recent changes to the GST HST credit in Canada have significant implications for families with low and modest incomes. The payment, now renamed the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, aims to provide much-needed financial relief as grocery prices continue to rise.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a one-time top-up equivalent to a 50 percent increase in the annual value of the GST credit for the 2025 to 2026 benefit year. This initiative is part of a broader effort to support Canadian families, with a total allocation of $3.1 billion for the top-up, which is expected to assist approximately 12 million Canadians.
For eligible individuals, the GST credit payment varies based on family net income, marital status, and the number of children under 19. Single individuals could receive up to $533, while married couples or common-law partners may receive $698. Additionally, families can expect $183 for each child under the age of 19.
The upcoming payment in April will reflect a 2.7 percent indexation increase for the 2025 benefit year, providing further assistance during challenging economic times. The next scheduled GST payment is set for July 3, 2026, and it is anticipated that this amount will be significantly higher due to the recalculations.
Furthermore, the new grocery rebate will see a 25 percent increase over the next five years, delivering a total of $8.6 billion in support to families across Canada. This increase comes at a time when Statistics Canada reports that grocery prices rose by 4.1 percent in February compared to the previous year, following a 4.8 percent increase in January.
As families prepare for the upcoming payments, it remains unclear if the one-time top-up will be included with the Groceries and Essentials Benefit. The government has not specified exact dates for when these payments will be made, but they have indicated that they will be distributed as early as possible this spring, and no later than June 2026.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific amount for the one-time top-up, leaving many families eager for clarity. The financial support provided through the GST credit has been a vital resource for Canadian families, and these updates are expected to enhance that support during a time of rising living costs.
