Significant Power Outages in Québec
“The majority of outages should be resolved by 11 PM [Thursday],” stated François Legault, the Premier of Québec, as the province faced a significant hydro panne de courant due to a severe freezing rain storm. As of Thursday noon, approximately 115,000 clients of Hydro-Québec were without electricity, with the peak outages recorded at over 215,000 across the territory.
The freezing rain storm, which struck various regions in Québec, caused extensive disruptions. In the Montérégie region alone, 44,000 residents were left without power. The storm’s impact, while significant, was reportedly less severe than anticipated compared to previous storms, as noted by local officials.
As restoration efforts ramped up, approximately 2000 workers, including independent contractors, were deployed to address the outages. Despite the challenges posed by the weather, the restoration teams worked diligently to restore power to affected areas.
By Thursday afternoon, over 100,000 households remained without electricity, highlighting the ongoing struggle against the elements. In the Montreal region, 32 outages were reported, affecting around 10,000 homes. Additionally, 19,928 households in Centre-du-Québec were also impacted.
In response to the outages, an advisory for boiling water was issued in Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac due to a power outage at the water treatment plant, further complicating the situation for residents. Local authorities are urging residents to remain cautious and prepared as the restoration efforts continue.
Louis-Olivier Batty, a spokesperson for Hydro-Québec, remarked, “Des dégâts sont nombreux, mais sont assez facilement réparables,” indicating that while there are numerous damages, they are relatively easy to repair. This sentiment reflects the optimism among the restoration teams as they work to bring power back to the affected areas.
As the situation develops, the government and Hydro-Québec remain focused on restoring power to all clients as quickly as possible. With the majority of outages expected to be resolved by Thursday night, residents are hopeful for a swift return to normalcy.
