Apple’s Ambitious Leap into Foldable Technology
“Apple is developing new iOS app layouts and revamping its core iPhone programs to add sidebars along the left edge of the screen, similar to many of its iPad apps,” stated Mark Gurman, a prominent tech journalist. This statement underscores the significant changes Apple is making as it prepares to launch its highly anticipated foldable device, the iPhone Fold, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro in September 2026.
The iPhone Fold is expected to feature an interior foldable display that measures approximately 7.8 inches, akin to the size of an iPad mini. This innovative design will allow users to run two apps side-by-side, enhancing multitasking capabilities. The outer display will be about 5.5 inches, resembling a small iPhone display, making it convenient for quick interactions.
Historically, Apple has been rumored to be working on a foldable iPhone for several years, with various leaks and speculations circulating in the tech community. The upcoming device is designed to operate as a hybrid between an iPhone and an iPad, aiming to provide users with a versatile mobile experience.
Gurman further elaborated, “The upcoming foldable iPhone that Apple plans to debut this September will operate like a cross between an iPhone and an iPad.” This statement highlights the unique position the iPhone Fold will occupy in Apple’s product lineup, potentially appealing to users seeking a larger display without sacrificing portability.
In terms of pricing, the iPhone Fold is expected to be one of the most expensive models in Apple’s 2026 lineup, with estimates ranging from $2,000 to $2,400. Gurman noted, “Apple plans to price the iPhone Fold somewhere around $2,000, and it will be the most expensive iPhone in the 2026 lineup.” This premium pricing reflects the advanced technology and features integrated into the device.
Despite its impressive specifications, the iPhone Fold will not support running iPad apps or the full range of multitasking features available on the iPad. Instead, it will run on iOS 27, which is set to be previewed in June 2026 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Gurman pointed out, “Though the iPhone Fold will have a display with some features that are also available on the iPad, it will run iOS, not iPadOS.”
Additionally, the iPhone Fold will incorporate a fingerprint sensor in the power button, moving away from the Face ID technology used in other iPhone models. It will also feature dual rear cameras and a hole-punch front-facing camera, catering to the photography needs of users. The device is expected to be eSIM-only and will house a battery capacity of 5,000mAh or higher, ensuring longevity for users on the go.
