Jeff Webb, who founded Varsity Spirit in 1974, was a driving force behind the evolution of cheerleading from a local pastime to a globally recognized sport. His journey began as a collegiate sideline cheerleader at the University of Oklahoma, where his love for the sport blossomed.
Tragically, Webb’s life was cut short at the age of 76 following a head injury sustained during a game of pickleball. He was removed from life support two weeks after the injury, leaving a community in mourning.
In 2011, Webb sold Varsity Spirit to Herff Jones and took on the role of CEO and president of the combined entity. His leadership was instrumental in the company’s growth, culminating in a $1.5 billion acquisition by Charlesbank Capital Partners in 2014, from which he reportedly earned $34.8 million.
Webb’s influence extended beyond business; he was a mentor to Charlie Kirk and played a significant role in the conservative movement. His efforts also led to the International Olympic Committee granting provisional recognition to cheerleading in July 2021.
Despite his successes, Webb’s legacy is not without controversy. He faced legal scrutiny over alleged antitrust violations and sexual abuse cases within the cheerleading community, raising questions about the practices of Varsity Spirit.
“Jeff Webb was a remarkable innovator and a true pioneer of his sport. His vision helped elevate cheerleading from a local activity into a worldwide movement that inspires young people across continents,” said José Perurena, President of the International World Games Association.
In December 2020, Webb officially cut all ties with Varsity Spirit, stating, “I’m leaving Varsity Spirit, but I’m not leaving cheerleading.” His commitment to the sport remained unwavering until the end.
