The 2026 Met Gala is set for May 4 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This year’s theme, “Costume Art,” invites attendees to explore the intersection of fashion and art. However, the event faces significant backlash due to its association with Amazon, which is a primary funding source.
Scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m. ET, this year’s gala will be co-chaired by high-profile figures including Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour. Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos are honorary chairs.
Last year, the gala raised more than $31 million US, benefiting the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition. Individual tickets cost $100,000 US, while tables start at $350,000 US. Approximately 400 guests are expected to walk the iconic red carpet.
However, critics argue that Amazon’s involvement undermines the event’s integrity. Activist Zohran Mamdani voiced concerns over affordability in New York City: “My focus is also on affordability and making the most expensive city in the United States affordable.” The backlash has led some to call for a boycott.
Fashion curator Andrew Bolton commented on the controversy, stating, “It’s reversing what we’ve done before.” The gala traditionally celebrates artistic expression through fashion but now finds itself entangled in discussions about corporate influence.
Despite these challenges, attendees like Sabrina Carpenter and Teyana Taylor are anticipated to showcase their unique styles at this prestigious fundraising event. Angela Bassett and Aimee Mullins are also expected to make appearances.
The gala will inaugurate the new Condé M. Nast Galleries within the museum—an exciting development amidst growing tensions surrounding its funding sources. Gwyneth Paltrow remarked on her outfit choice for the evening: “I guess it’s punk in that I’ve gone just totally classic on a punk night.” This reflects the ongoing dialogue about how fashion can both challenge and conform to societal norms.
The Met Gala remains a beacon of creativity and celebrity attendance in the fashion world. Yet as it approaches, it must navigate complex issues surrounding corporate sponsorships and community values.
