Background on the Power Outage
The Victoria General experienced a power outage that led to the postponement and relocation of surgeries. This incident occurred just before midnight on March 6, 2026, due to a problem with one of the building’s transformers.
Impact of the Outage
As a result of the outage, 21 surgeries were relocated to other sites, while an additional 39 surgeries had to be rescheduled. During the outage, five ICU patients were transferred to the Infirmary as a precautionary measure.
Restoration Efforts
Power was successfully restored at approximately 5:30 a.m. on March 7. Nova Scotia Health confirmed that while generators were functioning, the failure of one of the building’s two transformers caused the power loss.
Future Plans
In response to the incident, Nova Scotia Health plans to replace the affected transformer within 24 hours of the announcement on March 11. Completing this work will require a planned power outage lasting up to two hours.
Officials have stated that this replacement is crucial to ensure the reliability of power supply at the facility going forward. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further disruptions that may occur during the transformer replacement process.
