Impact of Severe Weather
Severe winds and a winter storm have significantly impacted Vancouver weather, leading to power outages and hazardous travel conditions across the region. Environment Canada has issued special weather statements for wind in southeastern British Columbia, with gusts expected to reach up to 90 km/h in the Fraser Valley.
As a result of the storm, approximately 1,900 customers in the Southern Interior are currently without power. Most outages have been attributed to trees and branches falling onto power lines, causing widespread disruptions. BC Hydro and Fortis Alberta are working to restore power as quickly as possible.
In Alberta and southern Saskatchewan, warnings are in effect due to wind speeds ranging from 90 to 110 km/h. The fast-moving winter storm has already caused multiple power outages, leaving around 8,000 residents without electricity in Alberta alone.
The Coquihalla Highway, a major route in the region, has reopened after being closed due to multiple crashes caused by the severe weather. However, drivers have reported long delays as they navigate difficult conditions, including rain, slush, and ice.
Ambulances were dispatched to a motor vehicle incident along the Coquihalla Highway, highlighting the dangers posed by the changing weather. Tanya Croft from Environment and Climate Change Canada noted, “Strong winds and heavy snow are causing downed power lines, trees contacting power lines and infrastructure damage.”
Amanda Horner, a local resident, remarked, “We have hit all kinds of weather,” reflecting the unpredictable conditions that have affected travel and daily life.
Environment Canada continues to monitor the situation, issuing special weather statements for parts of B.C. as strong southwesterly winds and changing winter conditions may further impact travel along the Coquihalla Highway.
