Extreme weather response shelters in Delta are opening due to frigid temperatures and potential snowfall, as announced by Environment Canada.

Extreme Weather Response Shelters Open

“A cool and unstable airmass over the South Coast will bring freezing levels to near sea level before Tuesday morning,” stated Environment and Climate Change Canada. As temperatures in Surrey and surrounding areas are expected to feel at or below 0°C, extreme weather response shelters in Delta will be open on March 9 and 10.

The women’s only shelter at Crossroads United Church will operate from 9 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., providing 10 inclusive spaces for self-identified women aged 19 and over. Meanwhile, the South Delta EWR shelter at Ladner United Church will be available from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., accommodating up to nine guests aged 19 and over, including couples.

These measures come in response to an extreme weather response alert issued by the Homelessness Services Association of BC on March 8, highlighting the urgent need for safe shelter during the cold snap.

In addition to the frigid temperatures, Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for potential snow on March 10 and 11. Snowfall accumulations are expected to be highly variable across the region, with current forecasts indicating the potential for 2 to 5 cm of snow.

“Due to the convective nature of the precipitation, snowfall accumulations will be highly variable across the region,” added Environment Canada, emphasizing the unpredictability of the weather conditions.

As the community braces for the cold and possible snowfall, local organizations are mobilizing to ensure that vulnerable populations have access to necessary resources. BC Housing and Options Community Services are among the entities involved in providing support during this extreme weather event.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the weather impact and the operational capacity of the shelters beyond the initial opening dates. Community members are encouraged to stay informed and seek assistance if needed.

As the situation develops, further updates are expected from local authorities and weather agencies, ensuring that residents are kept informed about the changing conditions and available resources.
