AccuWeather Faces Data Challenges
“There are hundreds of parameters that go into forecasting the weather, and when it comes to forecast models, you have hundreds of those that are all weighted differently,” said Travis Teague, a key participant in AccuWeather’s data management efforts.
AccuWeather, known for its global forecasting services, has been grappling with significant challenges in managing its extensive data resources. The company maintains 30 years of historical weather data for customer analysis, but has faced data volume constraints that necessitate the regular purging of valuable information.
Teague highlighted a critical issue, stating, “If we wanted to do analysis on a model run that came in and see if it was worse than what’s coming in now, we can’t do that because we have to purge that data from our on-prem systems because we just don’t have capacity for it.” This limitation has hindered AccuWeather’s ability to conduct thorough analyses and improve its forecasting accuracy.
AccuWeather processes real-time observational data for live streaming to customer applications, but managing numerous data sources without a single source of truth has complicated their operations. The weather data consists of highly specialized file formats that require custom tools for processing, adding to the complexity of their data workflows.
To address these challenges, AccuWeather is seeking a solution to automate its complex data workflows. The company aims to eliminate manual planning and validation steps that currently consume days of effort, thereby enhancing efficiency.
AccuWeather’s strategy includes orchestrating seamless job dependencies across diverse weather datasets, which is crucial for improving the reliability of their forecasts. By blending multiple weather models with expert meteorologist input, AccuWeather generates proprietary forecasts that are vital for its customers.
As AccuWeather continues to navigate these data management challenges, the company remains focused on enhancing its forecasting capabilities. The integration of advanced automation tools is expected to play a significant role in streamlining operations and improving data accessibility.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific timeline for implementing these solutions, but the company is committed to overcoming its current obstacles to better serve its clients in the future.
