Weather Advisory for Surrey
As of March 9, 2026, Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Surrey and the surrounding Metro Vancouver area. The advisory highlights the potential for snow accumulation, with forecasts predicting 2 to 5 centimetres of snow in the region.
The weather conditions are expected to deteriorate as a cool and unstable airmass settles over the South Coast. Environment Canada noted, “A cool and unstable airmass over the South Coast will bring freezing levels to near sea level before Tuesday morning.” This situation is likely to result in flurries or showers on both Tuesday and Wednesday due to low freezing levels.
In addition to the snow, temperatures are projected to feel at or below 0°C in Delta, prompting the activation of extreme weather shelters. These shelters will be open on March 9 and 10 to assist those in need during the frigid conditions.
Daytime highs are expected to reach only 4°C on Tuesday, while overnight temperatures may dip to 1°C on Monday and 0°C on Friday. The North Shore mountains and Surrey Delta Highland are anticipated to experience the most significant snow accumulation.
Power outages have also been reported, affecting over 1,300 customers in Northern B.C. due to strong winds. B.C. Hydro has stated, “We’re making good progress, but due to the extent of the damage, customers in Vanderhoof, Granisle, Fort Babine, Smithers, Hazelton, Prince Rupert, and the Nass Valley north of Terrace are expected to remain without power overnight.”
Travelers are advised to exercise caution, as the Coquihalla highway is open after a previous closure due to a jack-knifed semi truck. However, drivers should check road conditions before traveling due to icy conditions. Staff Sgt. Del Byron remarked, “Transport trucks are still backed up on the highway leaving Kamloops.”
