A snow and ice storm has led to widespread power outages in New Brunswick, with nb power reporting over a thousand customers affected.

Significant Power Outages Reported

A severe snow and ice storm has struck New Brunswick, resulting in widespread power outages. As of 1:30 p.m., 1,031 customers in Kent County were without power, according to N.B. Power. Earlier in the day, at 8:40 a.m., the utility reported 15 outages affecting 670 customers.

Impact on Schools and Transportation

Most schools across the province were closed due to hazardous conditions. However, schools in the Anglophone South School District and some in the Saint John-area Francophone South remained open. Highways throughout New Brunswick were reported to be partly to fully covered with snow, ice, and slush, complicating travel.

Severe Weather Warnings Issued

Environment Canada issued a yellow or moderate warning for hazardous winter conditions. The forecast indicated that freezing rain of five to ten millimeters mixed with ice pellets was expected to continue until early Thursday afternoon.

Local Impact and Community Response

Kent County, particularly around Bouctouche, was significantly impacted by the storm. Residents reported hearing the distant hum of generators as many sought to cope with the power outages. Local resident Marc Babineau noted, “If you go outside today, you can hear the distant murmur of your neighbour’s generator.”

Looking Ahead

As the storm progresses, concerns remain about potential worsening conditions. Aldéo Saulnier expressed uncertainty about the situation, stating, “If the wind doesn’t pick up and it stays like it is right now we could be in good shape, but if the wind picks up … I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

The storm has also delayed the opening of several post-secondary institutions in the province, adding to the disruption caused by the severe weather. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the storm’s impact on infrastructure and services.
